Mike Shea MD

ICF ACC Executive Coach

Founder, CEO Latitude 20 Coaching

A Boston native, I moved to Maui in 2012 to slow down, improve work-life balance, and enjoy paradise. In short order, I found myself pulled into leadership, helping to build a better healthcare system for the Maui community. I found myself back in the rat race - work overtook every aspect of my life. I had re-created the work situation I left on the East Coast. Below are the highlights of my journey:

EDUCATION

  • BA in Biology (cum laude) from Amherst College, Amherst MA

  • MD from New York Medical College in Valhalla NY

  • Residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, Albany Medical Center, Albany NY

  • Fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Albany Medical Center, Albany NY

  • Coaching Certification, Hudson Institue, Santa Barbara CA

WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Private Practice in Pulmonary/CC in Albany NY with Pulmonary and Critical Care Services Albany

  • Critical Care Physician with Pacific Permanente Group, Maui

  • Chief of Staff, Maui Medical Center Medical Staff

  • Chief Medical Director, Maui Health

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

  • Medicine and Management, Permanente Federation

  • Middle Management Program, KP Southern California

  • Advanced Management Program, KP Southern California/USC Marshall School of Business

LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE

  • I have participated in and organized two medical mission trips to Africa (Tanzania and Kenya)

  • As Chief of Staff, I created better accountability quality of care among the physicians, and developed a leadership bench for the Medical Executive Committee

  • As CMD, I led through the COVID Pandemic, the Maui Wildfires, worked under 3 different CEOs, and worked through two labor strikes.  I collaborated with the hospital’s communications dept, being interviewed for television, radio, and print media, serving on televised panel discussions for COVID, and recorded several public service announcements

COACHING EXPERIENCE

  • I have coached leaders from manager level to the c-suite in healthcare and other industries

  • I serve as faculty for the Hawaii Permanente Medical Group communication skills courses, including lectures and small group coaching

In June 2025, I stepped down from my leadership role to reprioritize my life and to pursue a career in executive coaching. I work part time as a critical care physician in addition to my coaching work. My aim is to help those whose experience matches mine to navigate thier challenges and find balance in the chaos.
